ndamentals of Patient Safety is an interactive, online CME course covering patient safety principles, reinforced with anesthesia-specific scenarios and examples. Case studies, quizzes and exercises within the course provide ample opportunity to apply patient safety concepts to the practice of anesthesiology. This course can be utilized to fulfill a component of the American Board of Anesthesiology’s MOCA® requirements.

Learning Objectives:
- Module 1: Epidemiology of Safety and Harm This module will look at how and why errors happen, including which type of medical errors are most common, the root causes of errors, and how error reporting and analysis relate to prevention.
- Module 2:The Systems Approach to Improving Patient Safety Blame and shame is being replaced by the systems approach. This module examines healthcare systems, the inherent errors, and how a system approach can anticipate and prevent those errors.
- Module 3:Communication problems are the most common root cause of serious medical errors. This module looks at the role of communication in patient safety and barriers to and strategies for improved communication.
- Module 4:Safety Culture This module will introduce the concept of a safety culture, its characteristics, and how such a culture can be established.
