Fundamentals of Patient Safety is an interactive, online CME course covering patient safety principles, reinforced with anesthesia-specific scenarios and examples. Case studies, quizzes and exercises within the course provide ample opportunity to apply patient safety concepts to the practice of anesthesiology. This course can be utilized to fulfill a component of the American Board of Anesthesiology’s MOCA® requirements.

Learning Objectives:

  • Module 1: Epidemiology of Safety and Harm This module will look at how and why errors happen, including which type of medical errors are most common, the root causes of errors, and how error reporting and analysis relate to prevention.
  • Module 2:The Systems Approach to Improving Patient Safety Blame and shame is being replaced by the systems approach. This module examines healthcare systems, the inherent errors, and how a system approach can anticipate and prevent those errors.
  • Module 3:Communication problems are the most common root cause of serious medical errors. This module looks at the role of communication in patient safety and barriers to and strategies for improved communication.
  • Module 4:Safety Culture This module will introduce the concept of a safety culture, its characteristics, and how such a culture can be established.

The American Society of Anesthesiologists is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The American Society of Anesthesiologists designates this enduring material for a maximum of 10.00 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Method:

At the beginning of each module you will be asked to take a pretest prior to advancing to the module content. After the pretest the content for each Section will begin on the main screen. At various points you will be directed to Readings 1,2,3, or 4 (accessed via the tabs at the top of the screen) which pertain to fundamental concepts of patient safety and supplement the anesthesia-specific information in each Section. All of the Readings will be included in the post-assessment. Resume the slides on the main screen after completing the reading. In each Section there may also be exercises or questions to complete in order to advance to the next slide. After all Sections have been completed, anesthesia case studies are presented to highlight the concepts. The case studies may also contain exercises – TEST MY KNOWLEDGE – you must complete ALL of these to successfully complete the module.
