This Basic Perioperative TEE program focuses on the basic hemodynamic state, ventricular function and valve pathology, which has been categorized into those that are likely to cause hemodynamic compromise or those that may not. During the program, there is additional information that extends knowledge beyond that of Basic TEE, and further study is encouraged. By the end of this course, the student will be exposed to a wide variety of cardiac pathology. 

This course helps fulfil the education component of the Extended CME Pathway for the National Board of Echocardiography (NBE) certification in Basic Perioperative TEE.

  • Anatomy
  • The Basic TEE exam
  • Basic hemodynamic state assessment
  • Basic assessment of valves and pericardium using 2D and color flow Doppler imaging
  • Common artifacts
  • Completion of 100 Basic TEE case studies focusing on 2D and color Doppler assessment

Learning Objectives:

After completing this activity, the learner will be able to:

  • Explain the concept and limitations of Basic TEE
  • Visualize the anatomy relevant to Basic TEE
  • Use  the standard TEE viewsApply  the echocardiography patterns  required to interpret ventricular and valvular pathology at a basic level
  • Describe artifact generation and recognize common artifacts


Target Audience:

Anesthesiologists, emergency medicine physicians, critical care physicians, and other physicians with an interest in anesthesiology may also participate.


The program is divided into 2 sections comprising of interactive tutorials to cover core learning objectives, and 100 case studies to reinforce learning. Each case study includes:

  • A scenario and supplemental information for you to complete a report.• The echocardiography images
  • A blank report for you to complete. (We use our goal focused H.A.R.T.scan report form for this course)
  • A report completed by the expert tutor
  • A summary of key findings
  • A self-assessment examination which includes 5 multiple choice questions. As part of the effective learning experience, once the self-assessment answers and the feedback have been submitted, the correct answers will appear instantly including further explanations on teaching points.
  • Self-declared time commitments for each tutorial and case that is to be used when claiming your CME credits.


To pass the Basic TEE program the student will need to review and submit assessments for 100 case studies and achieve a 70% pass mark. Learners who score under 70% may resubmit incorrect cases to achieve a passing score. Upon meeting the full assessment criteria the student will be eligible to claim the CME credits.
Upon successful completion, learners will receive an email with directions on taking the course evaluation and claiming CME credit on ASA's Education Center.

Estimated Time to Complete:

The program will take on average 100 hours to complete. We recommend a period of 3 to 6 months to complete the program, though this time will vary according to a participant’s time availability. We offer flexible learning; you may commence at any time and complete the course at your own pace.

This course is entirely distance-based learning. Broadband internet access is a course requirement as the course is delivered via the internet to your computer, and in addition, we administer the course online. Web browser version must have been released within the last three years. This program will cater for both MAC and Windows computers.  Requirements before you start:

  • Download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader (or purchase a Professional version) at
  • Download the Student App which synchronizes a complete copy of the course materials alternatively you may have purchase the USB containing all materials, in which case you may copy it to up to 5 computers and access the materials directly.
  • Your login and password. This will be your email address and the password that you used to purchase the course materials. If you change the password in the application form, then this password will be used instead. This is important, as the tutorials and content are all protected by your login credentials, and you will not be able to access the course without using these credentials.
