Wake-up Call: Managing Undiagnosed Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome

Course Description
This case-based CME program educates through the presentation of patient safety scenarios, and is available exclusively online. Patient safety is a component of the ABA’s MOCA® requirements.
Learning Objectives:
After successfully completing this activity, the learner will be able to: 1) Explain the high prevalence of undiagnosed obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) within the surgical population and that this largely parallels the obesity epidemic. 2) Explain why OSAS can present as “unexplained” postoperative cardiorespiratory arrest and brain death—as shown in the ASA Closed Claims Database—and that appropriate interventions may prevent this. 3) Discuss the pathophysiology, risk factors identification, risk stratification, and management/treatment of undiagnosed OSAS. 4. Apply existing practice parameters established by the American Society of Anesthesiologists for OSAS.
