Track: MOCA 2.0® Part 2 Patient Safety

Anesthetic Management During MRI and CT Imaging Procedures

There are significant challenges to anesthetic management when the patient is in the MRI or CT scanner because the patient's airway is less accessible. Direct patient observation may be compromised by noise, a darkened environment, obstructed line of sight, and other characteristics unique to this environment.

After successfully completing this activity, the learner will be able to:

  • Identify opportunities to improve the safety risks associated with MRIs and CTs at your institution.
  • Evaluate a patient's medical history to determine possible risks and best method of anesthesia care during an MRI or CT procedure.
  • Describe the recommendations for exiting a patient during an equipment or medical emergency.

Drug Errors in Anesthesia

Administration of potent anesthetic drugs with small intrinsic margins between effective doses and overdose requires constant vigilance. Anesthesiologists are acutely aware of the numerous claims related to drug errors included in the ASA Closed Claims Database and are familiar with the lexicon that classifies mechanisms of drug errors. Therefore, anesthesiologists know that the most common distinct mechanisms of error are substitution, insertion, and incorrect dose. They also must recognize that an incorrect dose is most likely to produce serious or even fatal consequences. Physicians need to regularly review the OR procedures to ensure safe drug use, and be alerted to the change before the drugs are provided and stocked in the OR.

Smoking Cessation in Surgical Patients: How to Help Your Patients Quit and Why It's Important 2018

We know that smoking is the leading cause of pulmonary and cardiovascular disease and a risk for poor outcomes in the perioperative period. In this module, we will review the health risks of smoking, the risk that are particular to the perioperative period, how to support smoking cessation as a teachable moment and review resources available to all patients. In addition, we will review the current evidence on the safety of e-cigarettes and other alternatives to conventional smoking methods.
